The Process
Developing a website is easier than you might think. The entire process can be summarized as follows:
- Consultation
- Site Structure
- Site Design
- Site Building
- Site Support
1. Consultation
What do you want to achieve with your website? Who is the targeted audience? Do you have a domain in mind? What are your timelines and budget? These questions help to create an estimate to build your website. |
2. Site Structure
Before design is looked at, it is important to know how your site will be put together. Do you need to make updates yourself? Are there any special features or technologies you need? What are the main sections, sub-sections and number of pages needed? This is essentially the blueprint of your website and will look like a flowchart when complete. See example site plan diagram.
3. Site Design
Once the site structure is complete, the design phase begins. Ideas for the site design come from a variety of places. You will be asked about the message you want your site to convey. Do you have some ideas that you would like to see incorporated such as specific colours, a company logo, certain photographs or images? Based on this information, between 1-2 design drafts will be created or you can look at some existing templates. The chosen design will then be modified and upon final approval, converted into a workable web template.
4. Site Building
Once the design is finalized, it must be converted into a website template. This is tested for cross-platform compatibility and stability. Once the final template is approved all links and pages are created. If you plan on being involved in the website updates and maintenance, you will be able to begin adding content at this stage.
5. Site Support
You may want to make your own changes to your website. If this is the case, you can receive a training session and the program necessary to do this. This will work on both Windows and Macintosh Operating systems and is extremely easy to learn and use. This gives you the freedom to make changes whenever you need.
